Today we were out bright and early for a Sun Run training session. OK, bright in spirit; it's still pretty dark at 6:00AM. One of our chat themes turned to all the crazy things we do to our bodies in pursuit of aesthetics and athletics.

Over the years we have experimented with different eating plans and fitness programs. We have punished our bodies in order to attain that dancer's body or that size 6 wedding dress. Our bodies have put up with a lot; isn't it time we show them a little love?

Let's be grateful for the bodies we have today. Let's look after them with how we eat and how we move. You only get one so be good to it!

I Am Not A Fanny Pack

Let me begin by saying, I am not being ironic, sarcastic, or otherwise insincere with this post. After recently wrapping up an excessively busy few months, I have a renewed appreciation for a much-maligned item: the fanny pack.

This highly functional and sensible item is now referred to as the "Urban Tool Belt". Many designers over the years have created versions of the Urban Tool Belt but Roots produces my favorite so far. The "Village Pack" is a leather satchel that attaches to a wide canvas belt with a cool, silver-tone buckle.

Worn facing forward, the cool factor is questionable. However, worn low and side-slung or facing backwards, it is utility-hip. This is a great item for anyone who need to be hands-free. Also useful for anyone with a tendency to lose/misplace keys, purses and wallets (no one I know!).

Roots Village Packs come in a multitude of colors but online availability is limited to brown and black.

We're So Vain: Tired Eyes

A friend arrived last night at 12:30 AM. Then of course, we stayed up until 2:00AM chatting. Ugh.

Eye cream is my friend today. My BEST friend lately is Kiehl's Cryste Marine Firming Eye Treatment. Very nice.

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part, but this cream really does moisturize the eye area and reduce lines. I love it and don't leave home without it.

One Easy Piece

Whenever I use the term "one-easy-piece", it's usually in reference to polyester, 70's attire. But, I've recently been searching out a "one-easy-piece" AKA "unitard".

Tights. Maybe it's just me but they never seem to stay up. So, why not wear a unitard to solve the problem? Unitards aren't super-easy to find but I did locate a few options. American Apparel's version is probably the most accessible but it's also 95% cotton which means it will fade more than it's synthetic sisters.

One obvious draw back of the unitard? Full undress when nature calls.

Love, love, love all the animal prints and exotic skins that are strong again for fall. Bought a leopard fedora recently - to be worn on "brave" days. Two rules apply when wearing animal prints:

Best with black (or at least a solid color like the red above).
Keep to a minimum (1 piece).

It won't be tough to find animal print at all price points this fall so take your pick and wear it proudly!

We're So Vain: Healthy Lips

I visited the The Brow Studio last week for my usual 15 minutes of suffering for beauty. While in the torture chamber/waxing chair, I was rubbing my poor, chapped lips. The technician stopped and said, "Do you want to get that?", referring to the huge chunk of dry skin hanging off my lower lip.

Gross. And embarrassing.

When my eyebrows were finished, the lovely lady recommended a few lip-care products. She told me if I used B Kamins Lip Balm, my lips would be moisturized and fabulous within 24 hours. I was skeptical.

Guess what? She was right. This stuff is money. And I do mean MONEY - $21 bucks worth. Totally worth it. Especially going into the deep, dark, desert winter.

Bonus Points: SPF 20

Achtung!: The Tote

Absolutely HAVE to share this hilarious story with you!

The tote is an indispensable item for work and recreation. I'm currently carrying a cavernous, black tote that holds everything - workout gear, laptop, wallet etc.

Last Friday I was running late for work. In a mad dash to jam everything I needed into my tote, it went like this:

The everyday necessities (wallet, sunglasses etc) were already in the bag (at the bottom).
Next, I threw in my gym gear: towel, shoes, clothing and the "unmentionables"
Realizing I hadn't eaten breakfast, I reached for a banana and threw it in the tote.
Remembering I needed a snack for work, I grabbed an English cucumber out of the fridge and threw THAT on top.
Ready to go, I heaved my bulging tote over my shoulder and raced to the office.

I start my day at 7:00 am and the door to my building requires a pass card before 8:00 am. The card resides in my wallet (at the bottom of my tote). After two (unsuccessful) attempts at waving my tote in front of the card reader, I realized I must dig to the bottom to retrieve the pass card.

As I lowered my tote to the ground to rummage through it, I noticed a construction worker standing beside me at the door, obviously needing to be let into the building. So, as I'm pulling stuff out of my tote to find my card, the first things I removed were:

one pair of bright blue, lace skivvies
one banana
one, very long, cucumber.

You can't make stuff like this up!

Wonder what the guy thought I did for a living?

Shoe Slave: Back to Booties

Oh thank goodness fall arrives soon! Let's return to our shoe-staple, "The Boot", with impunity. Boots somehow feel wrong in the summer. Simultaneously hot (temperature) and irrelevant - not good. Rows of boots stare at me from my closet all summer long. And all but the cowboy boots (you know, that Stampede thing) go unworn.

This fall seasons brings yet another round of gorgeous boot options. Loads of flat styles of choose from again - small mercies for those of us living in snowy cities. Piles of black, rocker-inspired spuds, platforms and black leather. Love it all.

With my granny-inspired style sensibility, I can't quite bring myself to confidently wear some of the fierce-looking fashion footwear. So this Jaden boot by Via Spiga was the perfect solution! A granny boot with a vicious heel in black, patent leather. Love. I think the Jadens were fall 2008 (picked them up for a song) but they're perfect this year as well. So cute with leggings and a sweater dress.

In my quest for the perfect earphones to help alleviate treadmill boredom, I picked up these Nixon earphones. I must say, they were not the ideal solution, but the sounds was pretty perfect and they were comfortable. They fit the bill until, two months ago, they stopped working. Expecting a customer service nightmare, I procrastinated.

Well, I just hung up the phone from a very helpful women at Spare Parts Chinook Centre. Guess what? The Nixons are warrantied for one year. All I have to do is take them to the store, and they will deal with them for me. Even better? I don't have to go through mountains of old receipts to find the bill. I actually gave Spare Parts my customer information upon purchase.

How good is this?

We finally have our summer! So, if you haven't done so already, get your pretty toes on.

The best pedicure in Calgary can be had at Macaronies in Kensington.

Macaronies' newest esthetician, Kim, is the lady to see. I broke from my French pedi tradition and opted for sparkly red (OPI Little Red Wagon) last visit. Love it. I also love the mini-OPI polish bottles. Do you ever use up a full size bottle of nail polish before it goes gloopy or you fall out of love it? I don't. Minis are the perfect solution.

This morning, I happened to click up on an image of Carine Roitfeld, editor of French Vogue. Love, love, love her. You simply MUST read this February 2008 New York Magazine featuring Ms. Roitfeld - it's an absolute classic. A few quotes:

Sound Styling

I've taken to carrying copious amounts of food around with me at all times. Part of my healthy-eating, YAYOBA kick. The dusty, beer-chillin' cooler bag just wasn't maximizing my style. So began my search for a cooler bag - focus on the COOL.

Through my search I have deduced that cooler bags fall into one of three categories:

1) Utility: think Walmart, red and navy with plenty of zippers
2) Obnoxious: think Budweiser and Harley Davidson
3) Impractical: think faux-Burberry design, large enough to hold a few carrot sticks and a bottle of expensive water.

The solution I found really has its' own category - Burton.

You know I love Burton luggage. Big fan. Should have known Burton would create the smartest cooler bags too. The Lil' Buddy even has a set of battery powered speakers you can plug your iPod into. The sound's not Sennheiser but it's pretty fun to have music with your cooler.

Good side zip compartments, sturdy zippers and loads of funky prints. Love it.

Yes, the fingers (and now toes) are constantly on display. If you're like me, your hands and nails are the hardest body part to maintain. Someone actually asked me once if I was a GARDENER?! Rude! My hands were even clean.....

I've found a nail polish color that reduces maintenance time. It's very close to nude in color so won't show chips and wear as quickly. Tickle Me Francey is from OPI's La Collection de France, Fall 2008 and is lovely for Spring 2009 as well. So pretty.

Now I will paint my nails, sip my latte and dream of getting my butt to France.

Good news! Bangles are encasing the scrawny arms of runway models everywhere this spring. Big, colorful, sparkly, you name it, bangles are big. Literally.

Love a trend for the masses. Unlike Christian Louboutin shoes, bangles are accessible to everyone.

Bangles are also a "cheap and cheerful" way to incorporate other current trends into your wardrobe. Instead of buying a canary yellow suit, try a bright, resin bangle of the same shade. Way less commitment.

YAYOBA: Granny Hands

This freezing cold, dry weather really takes a toll on the fingers. So, after numerous applications of Krazy Glue (literally) to close the cavernous cracks on my fingers, I decided my hands needed a little more TLC.

My efforts paid off - no more bleeding fingers! Thought I'd share a few of my DIY, cold weather, hand maintenance tips.

Inside out, drink lots of water and take a good fish-oil supplement. Outside in:

Wear gloves outside - always. This seems pretty obvious but I was lazy. Freezing hands = bad.
Slough off the dry. When you're in the shower, use a pumice stone, or other scrubby device, all over your hands and around the fingernails. Out of the shower, use a body polish/oil. My hands-down favorite (groan) is Kootenay Body Polish in Thai Ginger.
Use a heavy-duty moisturizer like Aveda Hand Relief or Gardener's Hand Repair. All day, every day.
Oil your hands. This step really makes the difference. Each night before bed, cut open one capsule of Vitamin E oil (or buy it in a bottle and apply). Lube up your hands, paying special attention to the finger nails.
Apply Nail Envy religiously. It protects your nails from the elements and prevents splitting (really). Even better - it's now formaldehyde-free.

Some people swear by wearing moisturizing gloves to bed. I personally can't do it.

Getting so excited for Saturday. Can't wait to get my hands on more Ali Ro!

Many of you have seen my "white house" red, Ali Ro, dress. That dress caught some serious attention in the Vancouver airport when I wore it home to Calgary.

Maybe it was the color.
Maybe it was the impossible-to-ignore reminder of the recent Obama victory in the US.
Maybe my skirt was tucked into my pantyhose.

I do know that dress is a major fashion coup. ONE, red dress will be available for sale on Saturday.

Girls. When you know and love fashion, it's rare to have your "hair blown back". My hair was blown back last Saturday.

Last weekend, Oliver & Lilly's took me to Vancouver to experience their fabulous new boutique and whip up a Saturday fashion frenzy.

Mission accomplished.

Oliver & Lilly's is the only retailer in Western Canada where you will find my new favorite label, Ali & Ro. Think dresses that make you feel like a lady. Think separates that are ridiculously chic and (gasp!) comfortable. I know. I couldn't believe it either.

So my Saturday consisted of the following:

trying on the entire store, loving everything
eating sushi snacks courtesy of, the always cheeky, Darren
admiring the fabulous customers who actually arrived with new shoes to try with O&L styles (LOVE that)
dishing with Jen about how amazing the clients looked (it's so much fun helping people shine)
watching Leighann work her special kind of magic - you MUST experience it first hand.

A Saturday in Vancity does not get better.

I lazily refer to any of my gym time, work out classes or personal training, as "training". Some smarty recently called me out on this reference and asked "What are you training for?" My answer? "Life."

You don't have to train for marathons.

Train to climb stairs faster.
Train to play with your grandkids longer.
Train to catch yourself when you're falling.

Some of you are already familiar with his stylistic-wizardry. For the rest of you, Tim Kenny is an incredibly talented (how long is the list?!): hair stylist, Kundalini yoga teacher, spoken word artist, friend. If you attended the June FSC soiree, Tim needs no introduction.

Shoe Slave: The Red Shoes

Today is a very good day. My quest for the perfect, patent, red shoe is over.

You know I've been obsessing for awhile. Ever since last summer, when I was transfixed by the Marc Jacobs pair.

Since then I've pursued, unsuccessfully, many pairs of red patent shoes. FSC members are the fortunate benefactors of this quest. Specifically, the gorgeous Via Spigas that simply did not fit me. These beauties are still waiting for an FSC member to give them a home.

Back to me.

My search efforts were rewarded today when this pair of Cole Haan pumps arrived. Fit? Perfect. Style? Classic.

And bless the marketing genius at Cole Haan who came up with the Nike Air partnership concept. Cole Haan quality with Nike Air comfort. A match made in Shoe-Slave heaven.

It will be hard to save these babies for the holidays. Will try to control myself.

Trends come and go but true style transcends the trendy. I consider the cocktail ring a timeless element of personal style.

I've always been a fan of the cocktail ring. Perhaps it's because I have (what many would consider) man-hands. If I'm wearing a ring, it has to be BIG and borderline obnoxious.

This season has brought a bounty of cocktail ring options and they truly are a must-have for the holidays.

You don't have to break the bank for these beauties. I've brought in a wide selection of fabulous cocktail rings for my fashionistas - affordable, fun, fabulous sparkles!

Fashion Quartered

Mini clothes are just about irresistible. Which is why I HAD to purchase two of this season's biggest trends for Miss M last weekend. It's so easy to indulge someone other than yourself.

Here's Miss M rockin' an animal print dress with a black petticoat. Clearly I'm biased but I know you agree - it doesn't get cuter.

So, the grown up application of these trends are as follows:

- animal print is fabulous in small doses. Unless you're a rock star.
- black is always stylish but keep it current with interesting details.

This outfit was purchased at Pink and Blue, baby couture in Calgary. Sweet service, beautiful clothing and (BONUS) candy for the grown ups. LOVE it.

The faithful readers of this blog are already aware that SHOES have replaced the 'it' bag. So, the rest of the fashion world is catching up with us.

Watch and listen to Bill Cunningham's gleeful take on New York fashion week and the spectacle of footwear that stole the whole show. If you're a regular listener of Bill's, "On The Street", you will get a kick out of how EXCITED he is this week. Love it.

A few pointers for those who dare-to-wear sky-high heels, here's a refresher from previous posts:

Don't wear them if they hurt (or if you're not woman enough to grin and bear it).
If the shoes hurt a wee bit - NEVER admit it (this is April's commandment and it's absolutely accurate). Let people admire your footwear. If you admit the shoes are killing you, you look like an idiot. A fashion victim. This is not stylish.
It's always prudent to pack a second pair of shoes (in your stylishly oversized bag). This does not mean flip-flops (as featured in BC's photos) or trainers. This means stylish, comfortable shoes that coordinate well with the outfit you're wearing.
Stand up straight. Rock the height and revel in your fabulousness.

FSC For The Boys

A lot of people ask if I provide personal shopping and fashion assistance for men. The short answer is "Yes". The long answer....is a little longer.

Most of the beautiful clothing I purchase and inventory is for the ladies. So boys, unless you're a drag queen, you won't find any duds in my studio. However, I do work with male clients individually.

The photo above is my friend and client who lives in Victoria, BC. He attended a "White Wedding" (guests were asked to wear white attire) last weekend and was at a loss for fashion alternatives.

We discussed his preferences and sizes and came up with a look for the event. I then shopped the outfit and individually purchased each piece, primarily online. My client picked up the footwear and the white dress shirt.

Needless to say, I was VERY excited to see the entire outfit pulled together. As quite clearly, it was a roaring success. A few words from the well-dressed gent:

"When my friend added a requested dress code to her wedding, I was almost brought to tears of stress and agony. But I consulted with FSC master stylist, Laura, and through the technology of the web she was working her magic from 100's of km's away."

basically, i was your one night stand last night and need my most important idem of clothing back--> my bra.

so yes, i was totally fine with the fact that when i left this morning we didn't exchange phone numbers (or names...); no big deal. but once i got home and sobered up, i realized, that we maybe should have because i left my bra at your house.

first off, i want to get something clear. this is no victoria secret-esq type bra. this is an imported good were talking about. princess tam tam-french lingerie.

ok. specifics about you. (what i remember.) they are not going to be too specific because my friends are on this all the time and think i took a cab home last night.

1) outrageously tall and good looking.
2) a commercial real estate broker from the san jose, but lives in the financial district in the city with an asian friend whom i believe, was celebrating his birthday.
3) going to slide saturday night.
4) really into golf, in fact went friday.
5) a fan of red gumm y bears.

i am:
1) someone who obviously loves her underwear.
2) obsessed with french everything.
3) not really into children. something we have in common.
4) occasionally from time to time caught wearing my clothes inside out.

so, where to go from here. basically, i'm willing to do whatever it takes. i can come pick it up, you can mail it to me, i can just have you leave it outside your building at a certain agreed upon time. what ever.

i hope to god you don't feel weird about this, because i don't. i obviously didn't leave it there on purpose. like i said, i'm not looking for you to take me out or call me. for god's sake, i'm resorting to craigslist for a grey bra. it's just a super cute one and i want it back. plus, it doesn't seem like you'll use it. you just didn't come off as that type.

Rave Reviews For Sunglass Hut

So my FAVORITE sunglasses of the season fell apart in my hands the other day. The arm literally fell off while I was gently cleaning them.

I was dreading returning them to the Sunglass Hut. Firstly, because I hate the mall. Secondly, because I was expecting a return, or repair, debacle.

Let's just say the return experience was the BEST I have ever had.

The salesperson, who was the only person on the sales floor:

juggled multiple customers
looked up my purchase on the computer (I didn't have the receipt with me)
examined my broken sunglasses and,
handed me my glasses back - fixed!

Stupefied, I asked "How did you do that so fast?" She answered, "It's a brand new pair."

As I returned to my vehicle, dazed and confused, I had two thoughts:

"I can't wait to get out of the parkade to put these babies on."
"I can't wait to get home and blog about this service."

Pictured above are the shoes purchased on the latest FSC shopping expedition in Quebec City. Notice the focus on "practical" footwear (we were on a sporty vacation). Notice the many multiples. What are the odds of actually wearing the same shoes as your friend on the same day? Even if we did, does it really matter?

Shoe Slave: The Search For Navy

Any woman who works in an ultra-corporate environment, probably has a navy suit hanging in her closet. I have a few. The problem is this: how to find a fashionable, professional, navy shoe?

I do enjoy matching my footwear to my pantsuit for a conservative and understated look. Alternatives to the navy shoe are black, brown or ox-blood. I'm partial to the ox-blood option, which is what I currently wear. A few other footwear choices would be nice though.

I found this ridiculously gorgeous pair of Marc Jacobs at Net-A-Porter. Sadly, they are not within my budget, even on sale. But they are dreamy, aren't they?

The sequined, Jill Stuart navy shoe is also gorgeous but not really appropriate for day-wear.

So, if any of you ladies out there can find an ungranny, high-heeled, navy shoe....bring it. My search continues.

Yes, I realize it's the end of July. In Canada, this means it's time to gear up for winter.

The most important wardrobe item this, and every fall? The coat.

I am a life long lover of the coat. My closets are full of them. Different options for every season. Fall coats, deep-dark-winter coats, formal coats, just-running-to-the-store coats - you name it, I've got it. It's not my shopaholic tendencies that have filled my front hall closet with coats - it's laziness.

You see, a great coat covers a myriad of evils. A great coat is the piece people notice when you're running errands in your painting clothes. A great coat, along with your most fabulous shades, will disguise your no makeup day and you'll look fabulous.

So now I have you thinking about coats, watch this blog for what to look for when buying one. Hint: start looking (and shopping) now.

Leo Bling

So, if you need another reason to buy yourself something pretty, here it is.

Your astrological sign (Aquarius, Capricorn, Scorpio etc) has its' own gemstones. Don't confuse these with your birthstone, which is determined by your month of birth.

Leo gemstones are quite lovely as you can see. Quartz, Citrine and my personal fave - turqouise. The gorgeous necklace above was a gift from an educated friend. So I'm smarter and more sparkly. Could there be a better gift?

Royal Granny Glam

The English media is all in a flap over Princess Anne wearing the same dress twice in a row. Twenty-seven years apart. Sheesh. Tough crowd over there.

I think the dress looked fine both times. I wear clothing my grandmother wore 50 years ago because it's great quality and still looks chic. Princess Anne's quote is exactly right:

"A good suit goes on forever. If it is properly made and has a classic look you can go on wearing it ad infinitum."

Or at least until you get sick of it. Then, you pass it on.

YAYOBA: Fitness for Moms

YAYOBA is a new section of the FSC blog dedicated to fitness and health. YAYOBA (You Are Your Own Best Accessory) was an original quote from Vikram Banerjee - who lives by this mantra.

YAYOBA means if you take care of your health, mind and body, the clothing you wear becomes secondary. Everything looks good when you feel good. Everything looks good when your body is in shape. Spend more on your health and you'll probably spend less on your wardrobe because you'll feel good from the inside out.

I believe in YAYOBA but sadly lack the internal motivation to get my butt to the gym. So, I pay for the gym, in the form of a trainer, to come to me. Sheri Horn, pictured above (hello!!), is a personal trainer and a women's fitness expert. Sheri is the sole reason I can see my abs for the first time IN MY LIFE.

An Iron-Free Shirt?

Whatever your opinion of Oprah, she and her team have keen eyes for the good stuff. So when O recommends, I will often try. Especially when it's an IRON FREE dress shirt.

I have a love/hate relationship with the dress shirt. Love them because they're always classic and look great on everyone. Hate them because every time I take them to the cleaners....I get taken to the cleaners. Eight bucks a shirt is a lot of disposable income. Particularly if you wear dress shirts to work every day.

Clearly, the alternative to dry cleaning (ironing my own shirts) is not a palatable option. Instead, I will wear knits. Call me cheap. Or lazy.

Oprah featured the NON-IRON Brooks Brothers dress shirt on her show this week. Apparently these shirts are crisp right out of the dryer. I was intrigued.

Upon further investigation I discovered that the white dress shirt is only available in-store. I did however, order a standard, blue, fitted model to test-drive. It was on sale AND Brooks Brothers doesn't gouge for shipping to Canada (bonus points).

Review pending. Watch for it.

We're So Vain: Perfect Lashes

Mascara is one of those beauty items you shouldn't splurge on. I've tried many and don't see much difference between the high and low end products. Also, you really should get rid of mascara after 1-2 months. This is not just a marketing gimmick from the cosmetic companies (like "Shampoo. Repeat"). Mascara gets dry and gross quickly. Buy a cheapy and you don't feel guilty getting rid of it.

To follow my recipe for perfect lashes you will need two implements of construction: the MAC Mascara Fan Brush and Maybelline's Unstoppable Mascara.

Unstoppable Mascara will seem clumpy when you open the tube. Apply only one coat, then quickly follow with the Mascara Fan Brush (upward strokes towards your eyebrow). This mascara really doesn't smudge and the fan brush will remove any extra mascara and comb out your lashes. Your lashes will look longer - I promise.

Net-A-Porter: Delivers

As regular readers of this blog you know I worship the folks at Net-A-Porter. The fashion, the simplicity of the site, the freshness - I could go on and on.

Until last week, I had not tested the most important piece of NAP - the purchase. I know, my purchase is so small you can barely see it...I'll work my way up to the coat (which I think is already sold out - it was $5,900).

Not disappointed. In fact, NAP overwhelmed me with their level of service. I was personally contacted by a NAP rep regarding delivery issues (the billing address was different from the delivery address). This was rectified and I received my purchase in two days.

Also of note was that NAP provided full delivery details on the address label (including my cell phone number). The courier actually called my cell, when I was unavailable to receive the delivery, to schedule another time for drop off. How good is this?

Now about that coat......

Hair Care Minis

Why do you always run out of the expensive stuff all at once? Is that just me? Luckily, the sight of Aveda Air Control Hairspray Travel Size made the sting of today's purchases slightly less painful.

Air Control is THE BEST hairspray on the market. Not for Robert Palmer do's - but for natural hold. It smells great too. No more packing big cans of hairspray in my luggage. These little guys are perfect for purse travel too.

And this video cracks me up. I actually wore my hair like that. In 1989.

Achtung! Short Shorts

Short shorts fall into the same category as the high-waisted jean. Done right, they are stunning. Done wrong, they are horribly, horribly wrong.

I've been seeing a lot of SS lately that fall into the latter category. So, another list coming at you - I must be feeling preachy these days.

Note: these guidelines do not pertain to short-wearing at the beach. Wear whatever the heck you want at the lake - I'm talking city-wear here.

Sorry to have to say this but, if your legs are not in great shape - don't even attempt it. You won't feel comfortable or confident and consequently, you won't look your best.
SS are more flattering if they flare out slightly at the bottom. Your legs look skinnier. Enough said.
SS look best with flats. Try sandals or a cute ballet flat. If you must wear heels, go for an espadrille.
Cut-offs? Don't even.
Wear something with full coverage on top. Think peasant blouse (a la Jackie O) or a tailored shirt. Let's keep the focus on your legs.

Be prepared for stares. All that leg exposure might break a few necks.

The White Suit

For summer, nothing looks sexier than a white suit. A clean, unsoiled white suit - which is pretty much impossible. That said, I keep trying and encourage you to do the same.

A few recommendations if you're going to attempt the white suit:

Make it a pant suit. White skirt and blazer - too much "ladies who lunch" not enough Katherine Hepburn.
Find the stretch. Linen or cotton fabrics will wrinkle immediately and look sloppy. Find a suit with spandex content. If will look and feel better.
Synthetics (again) are your friend. A suit with nylon or other polyester will resist absorbing moisture and other dirt. It the fabric has a bit of sheen, you can often brush off many minor marks.

And finally, rules for all suits:

Don't wear the pieces separately too often (ideally never). They will age differently and eventually look mismatched.
NEVER dryclean suit pieces separately for the same reason.

Haute Thursday

Of course we can't afford haute couture clothing. That's not REALLY the point is it? The point is to look...then sigh. These two images (from the Paris haute couture shows) are very different, but very, very sigh-worthy.

First up, Chanel. Tweeds, my favorite. Could he (Karl Lagerfeld) please stop it with that dress? There are FEATHERS on the hem! I simply cannot take it.

Second shot, Givenchy. Love the GRAY boots, the fur "vest", the whole thing - very modern and totally gorgeous. I've got to unearth the fur vest I bought a few years ago. I think it's in the costume box with my "cougar" costume - must retrieve.

Bonus item, Chanel two-tone tights. I hate tights. They cling in all the wrong places, sag in all the wrong places and make you sweaty in all the wrong places. I would suffer all of those things to wear these tights. Ridiculous.

Shiny Toys

This Canada Day, still obsessing over red patent. And since I cannot afford the to-die-for Celine bag, or the red Marc Jacobs, I will be content with these Via Spigas. Less of a financial commitment but still fun.

I feel a pointy toe is mandatory for the red shoe. Not everyone agrees but I'm stickin' to that. Black (or other dark color) patent can be rocked in a round toe, peep toe or sandal. These Stuart Weitzman's (below) would do nicely. Wouldn't they be perfect with this dress?

I find it so difficult to dress for work in the summer. The stores seem full of baby-doll dresses, and WHITE suits. Rarely does anything seem appropriate or adult. This spring/summer season is much better than usual. Cardigans, little jackets and skirts of respectable lengths are up for grabs.

Shirts increase in visibility in the summertime because you can actually take your sweater or jacket off (no more hiding that ANCIENT tank top behind a buttoned-up blazer). I like to have a selection of classic shirts to choose from when I get dressed in the morning. Great quality shirts helps make everything look and feel better. They can be worn casually with a pair of jeans, or all-business with a pantsuit.

I am a HUGE fan of the Audrey Talbott shirt. Pretty much the best shirt ever. My clients can't get enough of them. Beautiful fabrics, exceptional detail and they wear like iron. What more could you ask for?

I admit it. I'm a cheater.

Periodic strokes of fashion genius do occur. When they don't, I look to other people, web-sites and magazines for wearable inspiration. Sometimes I just can't figure out how to wear "X". That's when I cheat.

Net-A-Porter is where I frequently cheat. I enter a search term I'm looking for (example "capri pant") then look at the photos of how NAP styles them. Easy!

Another beautiful place to cheat is The Sartorialist. Impossibly stylish people from all over the world - showing us how it's done.

Shop for a winter coat now. Winter sweaters are crazy cheap in the summertime. Stock up on mittens and scarves at your favorite online store.

One of my fave retailers for service, delivery time and quality is still Sundance. You have to sort through some logo T's and other crap, but it's worth it.

So glad the Granny Glam trend is sticking with us. I give you small print fabrics, cardigans and skinny belts, trotted out at the Burberry Prorsum, Resort 2009 show.

I do love this look. A lot. Those of us exceeding 20 years of age and 115 pounds will need to modify. But the tailored pants and the long cardigans and/or jackets are great for every age and body type.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all over finding that perfect, NEW "blank". Otherwise, I wouldn't be in this business. But, I also love shopping consignment. Good consignment.

Totally scored this week and picked up a Nicole Miller, bias-cut skirt, an Isaac Mizrahi Dress and another '50's style sleeveless, black, wool dress. Each piece was immaculate and under $20.

Consignment shops are brilliant for the obvious cost-savings over full retail. Even better is that you'll be wearing something unique.

Vespucci in Calgary (new location is at Elbow and Heritage Drive SW) is a fantastic consignment store - you'll find tons of high-end labels there. Or try Fair In The Square in West Vancouver.

Southern Style

I've had the distinct pleasure of spending the past week in North Carolina. I've found some fabulous items for my clients in Calgary and Vancouver. But more importantly, I've picked up a few fashion tips from my Southern Sisters.

1) Do not be afraid of color. Or white.

As you can see in the photos above, I stuck out like an "Adam's Family" sore thumb in my black and tan ensemble. It's summer - think white, think bright green, think anything but black.

2) Rock a big smile. It's the coolest and most beautiful thing you can wear.

3) Pin-thin means you're not eating your shrimp 'n grits.

Women of all sizes ARE womanly and stylish.

4) The sun-dress is your friend.

This is a new one for me, being a life-long-lover of the pant. Skirts (when you live in Canada) mean hosiery and chill. Here they mean "one-easy-piece" and the wind up your skirt. Am all over that.

Shoe Slave: Heels 101

Susan Brink wrote an enlightening piece on how to keep your feet healthy in high heels. I cannot speak from a medical perspective, but I can offer these heel hints:

Save your pennies and buy the best quality you can - they WILL be more comfortable.
Wear your heels at home for practice. I recently purchased a higher-than-normal pair (pictured above) that I teetered around for an entire afternoon (while doing housework). Now I can run in them.
Please keep your feet clean. A sexy shoe is not going to make a gnarly foot look better.
If you're a rookie, pack a pair of flats in your purse. Have you seen girls walking barefoot down the sidewalk? Tragic.
Wear them to bed (alone). It's pretty sweet to wake up and admire your beautiful shoes. It's almost better than coffee.

The expression "If you can't change your mind, how do you know you still have one?" is near and dear to my heart. Which is why I was absolutely THRILLED when a friend called to say she had purchased TWO wedding dresses. Loved it. That is totally something I would do.

Now I have the pleasure of finding a home for the first dress. Of course, the Linda Lundstrom, raw-silk, bridal gown is pristine and never worn. It could also be dyed which would be absolutely amazing - I'm thinking bright yellow. However, it's pretty spectacular in white.

This dress is covered in beautiful, silk rosettes which are hugely popular for this year's wedding season. If you're interested in viewing the dress, drop me a line.

I was lucky enough to grab this dress (featured at Bluefly) in royal blue. That's right, I have one of them. And it's gorgeous. I have absolutely NO idea how this dress is made - the fabric is actually a tube with no seams. Stunning. Size 12.

Ginch Gab: Old Lady Panties

So... THE Tom Jones comes on stage.

My first thought is "sick" -- he's old and gross. (To be fair, he's 67).
I wonder aloud if or HOW anyone could actually be attracted to him. He's got his goatee and eyebrows emphasized with dark, black stage make up.
He's so tanned he looks like an orange puppet.

He starts singing and comes off and frail, his voice seems weak. I spend a bit more time watching Tony, one of the sexy back up singers (because seriously, oh my god he was hot). I try to imagine how sexy Tom might have been in his prime and think hey, too bad about all the plastic surgery, make-up and spray tan.

But then something expected but hilarious happens.

Tom starts belting out "She's a Lady" and his brass section has these over-the-top choreographed moves with horns going up over their heads and down. It's great, the 90% female audience is loosing their mind. No sooner has the song begun and a lady in her 40's comes ba-dunk-a-dunkin' down the isle with a thong spinning on her finger. She goes up to Tom and throws them on the stage. This starts a whooooooole exodus of panties and one after another 40-60-something women saunter up to the stage to fling their saucy little numbers at the big Tom.

And then I discovered the predictions were true -- the power of Mr. Jones's vocal chords IS in direct correlation with the number of panties on stage. All of a sudden, he starts thrusting, groin-rubbing and singing with ferocity "You Can Leave Your Hat On". He was... um... (I wasn't going to, but that's the word...) GLORIOUS.

All of a sudden,
the crowd goes *really* wild.

I look to my left to see what the big deal is and there is a women, probably in her 70s, WITH A FREAKING OXYGEN TANK moving her way up to the stage. I mean full out - like a tube across her face in her nose and she's carrying a tank of oxygen. Honestly, she might even be 80.

Nope, it's not a bathroom break. This feisty lady is getting in on the action.

She moves, very slowly & deliberately, up to the stage and throws her red, lacy panties (BIG red, lacy panties) on the stage and blows some kisses to Tom. She then turns around with the BIGGEST grin and makes her way back to her seat. I thought I was going to pee my pants from laughing and my face hurt from smiling. I really cannot explain how fantastic this moment was.

It is not very often you see the underwear of someone with an oxygen tank.

He stops mid-song, looks down and says, "You shouldn't be wearing things like these!".

The thing about Tommy, is that even though he's an old timey crooner and mostly ridiculous, campy and kind of a joke, he's in on the joke.
And that makes him awesome.

I would like to say, that once T.J. sweated all his stage make-up off and started loosening up, crooning, dancing, thrusting and grabbing his groin... I'm not going to lie to you... I saw the sexiness of Tom Jones.

And he is very, very sexy. (This surprises me more than you, I'm certain.)

He was done by 9:00 because Mr. Jones has old timey values and an old timey schedule...That's how he rolls.

I've never wanted SO badly to take off my panties right there and throw them at someone; Nevermind someone who could be my friend's Grandpa. But... much respect to him and whatever it is about him that make someone 40 yrs his junior feel so torn about this decision.

I repeat. I saw the sexiness of Tom Jones and the panties of a woman with an oxygen tank. My face still hurts from smiling...it was awesome.

Sex And The Sappy

Went to see the Sex And The City movie last Saturday. So much fun! It was a private screening to benefit Inn From The Cold, a Calgary organization that provides housing for those in need.

It was a well organized event with breakfast goodie bags, free champagne and a raffle featuring fabulous items including these red patent Marc Jacobs shoes. I'm recently obsessed with red patent shoes, thanks to my sister Robin.

Back to the movie. I'm ashamed to admit I shed tears throughout the (very long) movie. Yes, sometimes it was the sight of equally gorgeous and unattainable fashion. Mostly, it was due to the emotional trials portrayed by the women on screen. We all agreed afterward that the women in our lives are the glue holding the pieces together.

Shoe Slave: The Shoe Boot

I absolutely love the shoe-boot. They're super-stylish and provide some protection from the elements on those fall days. I bought my very first pair of shoe-boots in the early '90's at Fluevog on Queen Street West in Toronto. Platform, black and a touch Goth - I wore those shoes with EVERYTHING.

Good news! The shoe boot is big again for Fall 2008. In preparation for all those beautiful fall styles, I picked up this pair at Gothamcityonline.

You know I love SW. Always, always, always so comfortable. And sexy. This pair was reasonably priced (relatively speaking) and will be cute with a short skirt or cropped pant. Suite101 gives a great dissertation on how to wear the shoe-boot:

Shoe-boots or ankle-boots can be tricky things to wear. You can murder a look by adding these booties to a knee-length dress or skirt. Keep your skirts short when wearing these. The chunkiness of the shoe will also compliment a feminine mini dress.

These booties go well with long tunic tops and skinny jeans. However, wear them with care, or you may be in danger of them resembling a pair of pigs trotters! Whatever your outfit, shoe boots are meant to be noticed. Don’t hide them under floaty maxi dresses or under long baggy pants.

Maybe I'm obsessing about my fall wardrobe because it's so damn cold out.

I had two very different retail experiences today. One at IKEA and one at Tiffany's. "Really?! ", you're sarcastically saying to yourself. But, I've found little correlation between quality of service and exclusivity of products. Often they are inversely related.

Today IKEA mistakenly charged my bank account twice for the same dollar amount. The IKEA computer terminal "froze" mid-transaction and it was "re-entered". I returned home, checked my online banking and confirmed. my suspicion. When I telephoned IKEA, I was instructed to return to the store to receive a refund. You know where this is going.

After having a very one-sided interaction with the IKEA "customer service" people, I was informed that:

1) I was correct. My bank had been charged twice.
2) The money would be returned to my account within 7-10 days. If not, "here's a number to call."

It was Sunday. At IKEA. I took my "handy number" and left.

With home organization procured, my sister and I moved to the fun stuff - clothing! Being in downtown Vancouver, we wandered into Tiffany's on Burrard Street. There we received charming, attentive and unpretentious service. Clearly Tiffany's didn't go head hunting at Holt Renfrew to staff their new store.

As we made our way through the boutique, each sales person greeted us and asked if we needed assistance. The Tiffany's employees genuinely made us feel welcome. When I asked about the timepiece charm (above), the Tiffany's associate was a great help. I felt guilty leaving the store empty handed! For real.

I love that good service still exists. Love that we enjoyed it without spending a cent.

Tokyo Street Style

I don't know if these people are actually models but I don't really care. I love looking at Tokyo Street Style.

Love how different the styles are in each part of Tokyo. Love how you can mouse over the person's face for a close up. A lot of thought went into those outfits.

If more people visited Tokyo Street Style, the Dunkin' Donuts debacle may not have happened. Clearly, the black and white fringed scarf is a hallmark of the fashionable Tokyo teen, NOT a symbol of Muslim extremism. Sheesh!
